Okahandja
Okahandja, often referred to as the "Garden Town" of Namibia, is a small but historically significant town located about 70 km north of Windhoek. Known as a centre of Herero culture, Okahandja holds deep national heritage as the final resting place of prominent Herero chiefs such as Maharero and Samuel Maherero, whose annual commemorations draw large gatherings.
The town is also famous for its woodcarvers' market, where local artisans sell a variety of handcrafted wooden sculptures and curios, reflecting traditional Namibian craftsmanship. Strategically located at the junction of major highways, Okahandja serves as a convenient stopover for travellers exploring the central and northern regions of the country. Beyond its cultural value, Okahandja offers a peaceful, green environment with nearby guest farms and lodges that provide a taste of rural Namibian hospitality and landscape.

Aus
Aus, a small town in southern Namibia, is a place of striking contrasts and quiet historical significance. Nestled on the edge of the Sperrgebiet (Diamond Restricted Area) and the Namib Desert, Aus sits at an elevation of over 1,400 metres above sea level and offers unexpectedly cool temperatures and panoramic desert views.
Historically, Aus is known for having hosted a German prisoner-of-war camp during World War I, remnants of which can still be seen today. The town also lies close to one of Namibia’s most iconic attractions—the wild desert horses of Garub, which roam freely on the plains near the Garub waterhole, just 20 km west of Aus.
Overnight and dinner at Twyfelfontein, located in the Kunene Region of northwestern Namibia, is one of the country’s most treasured cultural and archaeological sites. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is home to one of the largest concentrations of rock engravings in Africa, with over 2,500 individual petroglyphs etched into the red sandstone surfaces of the area.
Created by San (Bushmen) hunter-gatherers and early pastoralists over 2,000 years ago, the engravings depict animals such as giraffes, rhinos, lions, and elephants, as well as abstract patterns and symbolic motifs thought to have spiritual or shamanic significance.

Desert elephants
Desert elephants are a rare and remarkable population of African elephants uniquely adapted to survive in the harsh, arid conditions of northwestern Namibia, particularly in the Damaraland and Kaokoland regions. Unlike their savanna counterparts, desert elephants have developed behavioral and physiological traits that allow them to endure extreme heat and long distances between water sources.

Afternoon gravures
In the warm, golden light of the Namibian afternoon, the ancient rock engravings at Twyfelfontein come to life. These petroglyphs, some dating back over 2,000 years, were created by San hunter-gatherers and depict a range of animals, human figures, and abstract symbols carved into the rust-coloured sandstone.

As the sun begins to set, the angled light casts long shadows that accentuate the details of the engravings, making the afternoon the ideal time for both viewing and photographing the site. This natural lighting not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also deepens the sense of timelessness and reverence that the site inspires.
